France Telecom in WDM PON Trial

Light Reading published an article describing a presentation by France Telecom at ECOC about its participation in the Sardana WDM PON trial. The Sardana group is currently testing WDM PON technology in Tellabs facilities in Espoo, Finland, and plans to conduct a trial in the town of Lannion in France in 2010.

France Telecom is concerned that new services will exceed the capapcity of the GPON technology that it is currently deploying. It plans to offer 3D TV services to mobile users by the end of 2008 and to flat screen TV users by 2011. France Telecom expects that 3D TV to a flat screen TVs will require between 50 Mbps and 90 Mbps.

WDM PON, 10G PON, and Hybrid PON will provide important new capabilities to fiber access networks and cause many more carriers to adopt FTTH strategies. The comments about 3D TV are interesting. I saw an NHK 3D HD demo at NAB, and it was quite compelling.

Cisco Introduces Cable PON

Cisco's Scientific Atlanta unit is introducing what it is calling D-PON, which is a PON based FTTP system that fits into existing cable HFC networks. D-PON will enable providers to provide an alternative to the telco G-PON FTTP offerings for greenfield application from Verizon and ATT. This system will be available in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Motorola has offered a similar PON based system for cable companies, so the two main U.S. cable architectures will support PON FTTP access. This is another of the growing numbers of arrows that the cable companies can add to their quiver to counter the IPTV offerings from Verizon and ATT.

Motorola's Cable PON

Motorola introduced PON for cable networks at NCTA last week. I could not understand what it is from the press release, so I just finished a briefing with them.

Motorola is integrating its PON systems into its cable network architecture. PON can carry a cable RF signal to the subscriber and deliver it to a cable set-top box. This makes it straightforward to integrate PON into a cable video service.

The PON provides a data service that is as good or better than the DOCSIS service but is not exactly the same. This means that the cable company will find it easy to support the PON data service in a green field where there is no cable modem service or to support business services. This is more of a problem in an overbuild where both data services will coexist. Motorola is working to address these issues.

Motorola stated that the key to this approach is the back office integration. Motorola has made it possible for the cable company to manage the PON with the same systems that it uses to manage the cable system.

Motorola has found strong interest in PON from the cable companies in North America and Europe. It will start serious discussions with Asian cable companies later this month. Cable companies are interested in PON as a way to support FTTP. This is becoming important to cable companies that are getting telco fiber competition from companies such as Verizon in the U.S.

Motorola's cable PON system is another technology that cable can use to counter the growing threat of TelcoTV services. It will help cable companies facing telco fiber to the home competition in particular. I expect that this will be a strong market for Motorola on a global basis.

Siemens Demos 10G PON

As part of a EU sponsored research project, Siemens has demonstrated a PON system that operates at 10 Gbps at distances of 100 km. This is four times the speed of GPON, the highest speed commercially available PON technology today. The distance supported by typical PON systems today are limited to 20 km. In this experimental system, the number of subscribers per splitter was expanded to 512. Siemens implemented an optical amplifier, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to extend the reach and increase the number of subscribers.

Siemens stated that it plans to implement these capabilities in its product line in 2009.

This demonstration shows how GPON can be taken up to the next level. Broadband carriers need an architecture that can scale to provide higher levels of performance over time. Ethernet has led the market in that regard. It looks like PON may be able to keep up.
